Ceramic Coatings… Wait, Huh?

Don’t worry — whether you’ve never heard of a “ceramic coating” before, or maybe you have some idea of what they are, but want more clarification, you’ve come to the right place! Since launching my business, I’ve had multiple people ask me various questions about ceramic coatings, and I wanted to make a page dedicated to them to hopefully achieve a few things.

  1. Provide a generalized crash-course on ceramic coatings (what they are, how they work, what they do for your vehicle, etc.)

  2. Answer some common questions and clear up any confusion or false information regarding ceramic coatings.

  3. Convince you to get your vehicle(s) ceramic coated by me ASAP! (I have an EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT to make later on!)

So… What exactly is a “ceramic coating?”

The question on everyone’s mind: “What even is a ceramic coating?” Well, let me start out by giving you the slightly boring and scientific definition straight from Google. According to Google, a ceramic coating is defined as, “a liquid polymer applied to a vehicle's exterior to create a semi-permanent, hydrophobic, and chemically bonded layer of protection over the paint. It uses silicon dioxide to protect against UV rays, chemicals, and dirt, while enhancing shine and lasting 1-5 years.

Now that *hopefully* the most boring part of this entire page is over with, let me give you MY definition of what a ceramic coating is! Multiple people have asked me what a ceramic coating is, and every single time, my answer has been the same: think of a ceramic coating as like a super-powered wax on steroids. While it’s a rather simple answer, I’d like to think that it’s a much more entertaining one! In all seriousness, it’s not too far off. Ceramic coatings are all the craze now in the detailing industry, and for good reason, in my opinion (as long as you find a knowledgable and trustworthy installer, like myself!) Most people are familiar with a traditional wax — in the words of Mr. Miyagi, “wax on, wax off…” Following so far? Good! While traditional waxes still have their place in the car-care world, when compared to a quality ceramic coating, they really don’t stand a chance.

Ceramic coatings come with a pretty lengthy list of perks and benefits. In no particular order, here are just SOME of the benefits that a quality ceramic coating provides:

  • A single coat of a high quality ceramic coating can protect a vehicle’s paint for YEARS, and I’m talking up to 10+ years in some cases! There is no wax that does that!

  • You can rest easy knowing that your vehicle’s paint will be protected from all different kinds of environmental nuisances including road salt, bug guts, bird droppings, tree sap, road tar & grime, acid rain (hey, you never know!), and more! On an unprotected surface, these things can etch into a vehicle’s clear coat and are a pain to remove — even becoming permanent in the most severe cases.

  • Think of it like a semi-permanent layer of sunscreen for your vehicle’s paint! This often gets overlooked but UV rays from the sun can actually be very damaging to a vehicle’s clear coat and base color. A ceramic coating provides protection against paint yellowing, oxidization, fading and cracking to leave your paint looking as vibrant as ever.

  • The hydrophobic properties of a ceramic coating are always fascinating to see with your own eyes. Just a single coat of a ceramic coating will leave your vehicle’s exterior repelling water like nothing, and it is NOT just for looks! This helps keep a vehicle’s appearance stay cleaner longer by reducing any dirt or dust buildup whenever the vehicle gets wet, as the water will simply bead up and roll right off the vehicle, carrying some of the dirt with it (this is often referred to as “self-cleaning!”) These hydrophobic properties also help against water spots and oxidization!

  • Pictures honestly never do a vehicle justice after having a ceramic coating applied, the gloss and just how the vehicle’s paint pops out at you is truly remarkable. You think your car looked great when you first bought it, even if it was brand new? Prepare to have that image blown out of the water by your vehicle after it’s been ceramic coated.

  • With all of the protection that a ceramic coating provides, it actually makes a vehicle much easier to clean. No more moaning and groaning about how “it’s probably time for some more wax again,” or “this thing is filthy, I’m going to be out here scrubbing forever!” All of those headache inducing thoughts magically go away as soon as your vehicle has been ceramic coated!

Ceramic Coatings - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Even without seeing your vehicle beforehand, I can almost guarantee that your vehicle would be a great candidate to receive a ceramic coating! There would only be a handful of vehicles that I would “turn away,” and they would have to be in pretty rough shape and in need of some serious paintwork.

  • Well… not exactly! To ensure that the ceramic coating bonds properly to your vehicle’s clear coat, there is a specific wash process that it must go through first. This is crucial as it will impact overall longevity and effectiveness of the coating. The paint must be as clean as it can possibly be, along with being clear of any stubborn contaminants (stuck on road tar/grime, oxidization, tree sap, etc.) If these conditions aren’t met, the coating will be at a much higher risk for premature degredation and much lower effectiveness. I never cut corners with any of my work, but it would be highway robbery if I cut any corners with a ceramic coating application! A poorly prepped surface for the coating to adhere to would essentially just end up in a waste of your money, and that doesn’t fly with me.

  • Yes, ceramic coatings are often associated with paint corrections! While you can learn more about what a “paint correction” is on my full services page, I can give a quick rundown of what one is and why ceramic coatings normally go hand-in-hand with them just for the sake of conversation. The main goal of a “paint correction” is simpler than you might think. As the term suggests, you are “correcting” any defects present in the vehicle’s clear coat to restore the overall appearance of the exterior of the vehicle. This is achieved by both buffing and polishing the vehicle. The paint defects are buffed out and then the paint is polished to restore the luster and shine that it had when it was fresh off the assembly line. To put it as simply as I can, the reason why ceramic coatings are often associated with paint corrections is because if you were to have your vehicle’s exterior essentially put back to nearly brand new condition, it will mean NOTHING if you don’t protect it properly! A simple wax or paint sealant will NEVER protect a vehicle nearly as LONG or as WELL as a ceramic coating will! Ceramic coatings adhere best to a clean and unobstructed surface, and there is no cleaner surface than a vehicle’s exterior after undergoing a paint correction!

  • NO! Absolutely not - a paint correction is not always for everyone, and that is totally understandable. Ceramic coatings can be applied just as well to a vehicle that may have some defects present, as long as it’s clean! It really does just come down to a matter of preference — If you want your weekend-warrior looking like show-quality all of the time, a paint correction would be right up your alley, but if you just want your daily driver to be protected for the long haul and also look great at the same time, then a ceramic coating alone would likely suffice!

  • Hey, don’t worry, I get it — money talks! Sometimes people may think that ceramic coatings are going to be way out of their realistic price range, but I’m here to tell you that isn’t necessarily true! Don’t worry, ceramic coatings do not cost thousands of dollars — at least not with me, they don’t! For me, pricing for a ceramic coating application will depend on a few things: size of the vehicle, the specific coating you would like applied, and how many coats of it that you would like applied.

  • Definitely an important question! Honestly, it depends on the scope of work — if you’re having your vehicle come in for a complete inside/out cleaning & a full paint correction prior to the ceramic coating application, that will likely take the better part of two whole days, perhaps even a portion of a third day depending on the vehicle and its overall condition. Now if you’re only looking for an exterior detail followed by a ceramic coating application without any sort of paint correction, that’s something that could be done in a single day, regardless of vehicle size. I never rush through any of the work that I do, but I always take extra time and care with ceramic coatings as it is a relatively delicate process and I never want the results to be jeopardized because I decided to try and cut corners.

  • This is also an excellent question, and not to fear, there isn’t some sort of crazy maintenance process required to keep your ceramic coating in tip-top shape. While it isn’t a complicated process by any means, it is important that a ceramic coating is maintained at least semi-regularly. Obviously life can get busy, and it’s not always in the cards to hand-wash your vehicle every few weeks — believe me, I know! Once ceramic coated, it’s important that your vehicle is hand-washed with a PH neutral car soap as that’s what best cleans a ceramic coating and has it looking as close to brand new again once you’re done. It’s not the end of the world if your vehicle goes more than a few months without getting a good wash, you aren’t going to seriously impact the longevity of the coating, but it’s definitely not something that should be forgotten about, either. I go over these things in more detail with my clients in person once they’ve completed their ceramic coating appointment, but I also offer maintenance plans at various time intervals for all of my ceramic coating applications! You can just bring your vehicle back to me and let me take care of the rest, and it’ll look as if it was just freshly coated by the time you pick it up! You can also read more about what else is included in my ceramic coating maintenance plans on my services page!

  • Actually, yes, there is! Not only do they provide some of the best protection to your vehicle’s exterior, it’s also important to note that your vehicle’s ceramic coating WILL pay for itself by saving you both TIME AND MONEY in the long run! It’s true, just think about it — no more frequent trips to the car wash because your vehicle won’t stay clean, no more vicious cycle of buying and applying more and more wax to your car because it needs to be waxed every two months, no more long days off spent in the driveway trying to get all of the crud off of your vehicle just so it looks half decent — that all goes away! You get your vehicle ceramic coated ONCE, and if you take care of it, it’ll take care of you AND your vehicle in more ways than one.

(I would also argue that investing in a ceramic coating ASAP will actually help your vehicle hold some of it’s value better and longer compared to an uncoated vehicle — especially in New England!)

  • Not even close! That is no slight on you; it’s just that a “ceramic spray coating” for $15 at Walmart and a true ceramic coating are two COMPLETELY different things! A “ceramic spray” will last you a few months (if you’re lucky), with nowhere NEAR the same amount of protection and benefits that a true ceramic coating will provide your vehicle with. There are NO “spray on” ceramic coating products in my shop! I only use the REAL stuff that comes in a little bottle, where it’s applied by hand, panel by panel! Get it done right and come let me protect your vehicle the proper way!

And now… I have an exciting announcment to make!

As I have said since launching my business, I’m setting out to be the new one-stop-shop for all kinds of detailing and car care needs. To take a step further in doing just that, I wanted to look for ways to continue to legitimize myself and make it known that I was serious about what I said! Without further ado, I am thrilled to announce that as of January 2026, I am officially a Certified Installer for System X Ceramic Protection! Also known as Element 119, System X is a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of some of the most advanced and state-of-the-art ceramic coatings on the market, with products made for the aircraft, marine and automotive industries. All of their ceramic coatings are manufactured in Thomaston, CT, so there’s a local aspect to them as well which is great!

  • System X has a wide variety of products, and they are all top notch. In the ceramic coating world, they are known far and wide as one of the leaders in the industry, and it’s an honor to be able to represent them. Remember all of benefits of a “quality ceramic coating” that I listed earlier? Well, let’s just say that System X’s products take things beyond just “quality.” After seeing the results for myself, there is no other coating that I’d rather use on my own personal vehicles. Pictures hardly do these products justice, it’s something you truly have to see for yourself — so let’s make it happen!

  • We all know that cars depreciate as soon as you buy them, generally speaking. As depressing as that can be to think about, having one of System X’s products applied to the exterior (or the interior!) of your vehicle will all but guarantee that you’ll be preserving as much resale value as possible. Any of their products WILL pay for themselves when it comes time to trade-in or sell your vehicle!

  • Yes, you read that correctly! The vast majority of products manufactured by System X offer varying kinds of warranties, which is not something that you can get from just any ceramic coating! For example, their most powerful product, Max G+, offers a LIFETIME WARRANTY on top of already being a product that will last 10+ years! The process of registering your product’s warranty is super simple — and I’ll be with you every step of the way to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. When it comes to such an important investment like your vehicle, knowing that there’s a warranty on your ceramic protection offers peace of mind — and you can’t get that just anywhere.

  • Another super cool feature of most of System X’s products is that once applied to your vehicle, you’re able to update your vehicle’s CARFAX to reflect your vehicle’s new ceramic protection! Not only is this a neat feature but it will also help to preserve your vehicle’s resale value! Nobody wants to deal with a vehicle with a bad CARFAX — when someone sees that you even reported your ceramic protection application on your CARFAX, they’ll know that they’re dealing with someone who clearly cares about their vehicle and will likely be more compelled to offer top dollar for your car.

Oh, cool! So, uh… Why should I care?

A completely valid question! These are all reasons why this is so important:

Now that the crash course is over… TIME TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Hopefully now you have a better understanding of what a ceramic coating is and also how SMART of an investment that it is as well! Now all that’s left is to have a coating applied to YOUR vehicle! Lucky for you, I think I know someone who can help you out with that… Oh, right, IT'S ME!
